October 1 - October 5
We began the week celebrating 103 years of Roycemore School with a pep rally! It was a great time of fun and excitement. This week the third graders joined the fourth graders to bring math and science to life in our classrooms. We used pumpkins from our school garden to estimate the weight and number of seeds in the pumpkins, measure the circumference of the pumpkins and count the creases on the pumpkins. We used our data to create bar graphs and the students worked together to count the pumpkin seeds by groups of 2's, 5's, or 10's. Students watched as the pumpkins cooked in the ovens to prepare for this upcoming week's lesson. We will be following a recipe to bake pumpkin sheet cake to share with the school. In math, students are continuing to work on place value and rounding. In reading, students are focusing on asking questions as they read. Students are writing detailed summaries to share their reading adventures. The theme of our community meetings has been "Belonging." As we read mentor texts like Big Al, The Lost Thing, and Babushka Baba Yaga, we followed the journey of the main characters as they sought belonging.
