Reading Highlights
In reading this week, we worked on using the questioning strategy while reading. Questioning is a strategy that readers use to engage with the text. Questioning techniques help readers to clarify and comprehend what they are reading. We read Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco to practice using our questioning strategy. In this book, Patricia Polacco told a story about her own childhood through the eyes of the character Trisha. Trisha could paint and draw beautifully, but when she looked at words on a page, all she could see was jumble. It took a very special teacher to recognize little Trisha's dyslexia: Mr. Falker, who encouraged her to overcome her reading disability. In our class discussion, students talked about how they were surprised that this well known author originally struggled as a reader. This inspired us to keep working through our own learning challenges!
Math
In math this week, we continued working on multi-digit addition and subtraction We also learned strategies to use that help us solve word problems. We took notes on the CUBES strategy and practiced using it to solve multi-step addition and subtraction word problems.
We are keeping a Math Journal to help us remember all of the concepts we are learning. Please ask your child to show you their journal and encourage them to use it to help them as they complete their homework.
The students in the lower school now have access to Moby Max which is an online math practice website. Students will have their own log in and will have access to the lessons and games at school and at home. I have included link for Moby Max under the helpful links section.
